Andrology Urology
This
department continues to be the flagship of the Institution. From modest
beginnings in April, 1990 there has been tremendous strides in the
department. It is one of the busiest and highly rated departments of urology
in the country. Ten Urology postgraduates have been trained from the
institute and are now leading practitioners in different corners of India.
The department is blessed with full time committed staff and state of the
art equipments. We have the best endoscopic equipments including those
needed to handle neonates. Laparoscopy Urology is well established. Urinary
stones are routinely dealt by keyhole surgery and shock wave lithotripsy.
The Dornier Lithotriptor has helped to disintegrate stones not seen on
conventional Xrays using Ultrasound focalisation. Emphasis has been on short
hospital stay and conversion into day care procedures
Cardiology
Our Cardiology department and Research Centre comprises of 24 hours
emergency services to manage the case of Acute myocardial infarction for
thrombolysis and subsequent management and to manage Cases of congestive
cardiac failure for stabilization and various other acute cardiac cases for
round the clock management. The department is well equipped with critical
care unit with the monitors and ventilators.
» Cath Lab : The department has its unique cardiac
cath lab from WIPRO GE OEC medical system in-corporation through which
various diagnostic and interventional Cardiac procedures are being done.
Cardiac
Anaesthesiology
Cardiac
anaesthesia is inextricably intertwined with cardiac surgery, and has mainly
evolved in the last 50 years and grown into the largest influential
sub-speciality of anaesthesiology over the past eleven years.
It is by no means an exaggeration to state that the remarkable progress of
cardiac surgery over the last six years in our hospital has been possible
only because surgeons were ably aided by innovations in cardiac anaesthesia.
From PA catheters and Trans-esophageal Echocardiography to Thoracic
Epidurals enabling fast-track anaesthesia for beating heart surgery,
anaesthesiologists have kept pace with all the advancement in cardiac
surgery by constantly re-inventing themselves, learning new techniques and
mastering new technology.
Cardio -
Thoracic Vascular Surgery
In 2005-2006 we have completed 1000th case of our department. There has
been a significant rise in the quality of surgical work performed in the
department though the numbers may not have risen too much. We have started
Endoscopic harvesting of saphenous vein for suitable cases. The department
of Cardio Thoracic surgery steps into new dawn of success. Every year, the
department attains its utmost efforts and pains in curing each patient and
ensures quality patient care and services.
Dental Oral Surgery
Well-qualified and experienced practitioners manage the department with
most sophisticated equipments attached with a fully equipped dental lab
managed by a qualified dental technician
The unit provides the most modern dental care for even the most trouble
some dental problems and orofacial anomalies at the most reasonable and
nominal cost.
Department of Dental and Oro maxillo facial surgery stepped on to another
fascinating successful year. Though there are various treatment modalities
this year focus was more towards cosmetic dentistry.
Dermatology
Venereology
Department of Dermatology Cosmetology and Venereology is in touch with
latest development in the field. It deals with various dermatological
procedures apart from accurate diagnosis of even trouble some acute and
chronic skin disease. The various routine daily procedures carried out in
the department of Skin and Cosmetology.
The department has good success rate in treating various life threatening
drug eruptions like EMF, TEN, SJS and chronic skin diseases
Nephrology - Dialysis
Our department houses one of the largest Haemodialysis units in Tamil Nadu.
We have the most recent haemodialysis machines, which offer cutting edge
technology at a reasonable cost. We have dedicated machines and separate
chambers for HCV and HBV infected atients. We also have facilities for
continuous renal replacement therapies. We perform specialized procedure
like plasmapharesis for a variety of renal as well as extra renal diseases.
We have an active Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) program.
A Baxter PD centre was established in collaboration with Baxter India Ltd,
to enhance CAPD program
Neurology
The
department of Neurology has reached the pinnacle of achievement in its
growth and development in the year 2005-2006. Neurology department has two
consultant neurologists and two medical officers available round the clock.
We have a state of the art neuroelectro physiology laboratory and we are
doing Nerve conduction study , EEG Electromyography and evoked potentials.
With the separate sleep laboratory the various problems during sleep are
managed effectively.
The number of patients attending our department has been increased
remarkably almost doubled compared to the previous year. We have 1041 new
cases and 2061 old cases with the following Neurological disorders
Neurosurgery
The department of Neurosciences is improving year wise and this year it has
achieved significant improvement. The percentage increase in number of cases
operated is best so far in last ten years.
This year the number of elective case has increased very much because
almost all difficult cases are being operated at our department. This year
we have started doing functional and vascular neurosurgeries. These are
highly sophisticated and delicate procedures done only at few neurocentres.
Streotactic biopsy was done for the first time this year.
We offer micro neurosurgery for all patients which results in very low
morbidity and practically nil mortality. We offer endoscopic surgery for
pituitary tumour and CSF leak. Skull base surgery another specialized field
in neurosurgery is done with good results.
Ophthalmology
The
Ophthalmology department has its own community-oriented programes to serve
the needy poor suffering with eye problems. The team does excellent work in
primary; secondary and tertiary level eye care in Madurai and covers the
southern districts of Tamilnadu. In tune with the hospitals commitment to
the impoverished, the department conducts regular eye camps in seven
districts totally free of cost.
The Cornea clinic and Other clinics…
We deliver sophisticated tertiary level eye care. The cornea clinic
performs therapeutic and optical corneal transplantations. The IOL clinic
performs phacoemulsification-sutureless surgery with early visual
rehabilitation and immediate surgery. Glaucoma clinic performs antiglaucoma
surgeries and combined procedures.
Orthopaedics
Traumatology
The Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology has become one of the
tertiary referral Centre for management of musculoskeletal disorders, joint
replacements, trauma, arthroscopic surgeries and spine surgeries. The
department is also recognized by the National Board of Examinations, New
Delhi for Post-Graduate training for the award of "Diplomate of
National Board" degree in Orthopaedics.
We are backed with all state-of-the-art facilities at par with
international standards in management of Trauma and experienced to manage
mass casualty cases and disaster management. Management of polytraumatised
victims is a regular feature and multidisciplinary interaction under one
roof has been a boon for successful management of these patients. Round the
clock accident and Emergency services and readily available specialists
provide the best possible treatment for patients.

- Introduction of polysomnogram (Sleep Lab) for those patients
suffering from snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
- Introduction of BERA ( brain stem evoked response audiometry) for
hearing evaluation in children
Obstetrics Gynaecology
Obstetrics department offers the most sophisticated, HIGH RISK OBSTETRICS
CARE under one roof. The support of other allied departments and excellent
neonatal care make this a reality. The maternal mortality rate among our
booked antenatal patients is NIL. The spectrum of services available are
