Introduction
Earlier known as Mamallapuram, the city of Mahabalipuram is part of the
Golden Triangle of tourism in South India. It is situated at the distance of
about 55 km from Chennai and the place is full of spectacular sights. The
port was once a flourishing port town of the Pallava rulers and even now
boasts of many gems that form part of almost every tourist itinerary.

» Varaha Cave : It is a small rock cut hall where
you can notice the shrines of two incarnations of Vishnu-Varaha and Vamana.
The other caves that you'd like to see here are the Dharmaraja Cave and
Mahisasurmardini Cave. Another cave worth a mention is the Tiger Cave, which
is located at the distance of about 5 km from Mahabalipuram.
» Shore Temple : The place is a true expression of
Mahabalipuram and is a three in one shrine where one Vishnu Temple is
situated between two Lord Shiva temples. There is endless sea on both sides
of it whereas the idol of Lord Vishnu is present in the sanctum sanctorum.
» Arjuna's Penance : It is a sculpture in rock by
the side of the sea which stands out amidst its vast surroundings. The place
where the carved rock is situated is 58 km away from Chennai.
Introduction
The purpose behind why Auroville exists is that the founders of the city
wanted to make it a universal experimental township where men and women of
all nationalities could coexist with each other in harmony. The place was
inspired by the vision of Sri Aurobindo and when it was being inaugurated, a
boy and a girl from 124 countries came here and poured a handful of soil
from their homeland in a lotus shaped marble urn near the city centre.

» Matrimandir : It is said to be the physical and
spiritual centre of the Auroville. Its inner chamber has been made
specifically for peaceful meditation by the residents of the city. It is a
100 feet high elliptical sphere which rests on four pillars that go deep up
to the foundation.
